General Requirements
An interest in and basic knowledge of the game. Time to commit to rules and mechanics study, meetings, and games. For those starting out, youth games are Monday and Tuesday nights and all day Saturday. High school freshman games are Thursday nights and JV/V games are Friday nights, with occasional Saturday afternoon games.
Financially, the requirements are:
  • Membership dues and liability insurance ($80) .
  • Uniform -- Starter packets go for about $200. Each year, gently used uniforms are donated by veterans for those newcomers who may need assistance.
Expectations
You'll start out at the youth level where there are plenty of games to go around. The KCOA provides officials for Jack Frost, North of the River, and Taft youth programs. All officials will be part of a high school crew for study purposes. Each new official is encouraged to sit in on the pregame preparation and watch the crew from the sidelines to get a feel for the game at the upper levels of high school football.
Certification
To be certified to officiate CIF-sanctioned (high school) football games, you must:
  • Score 80% (70% for first-year officials) in a rules knowledge exam.
  • Score 80% (70% for first-year officials) in a mechanics knowledge exam.
  • Work for free at least two (2) scrimmages before the season.
Benefits
The rewards are great.
  • Extra income. For 2011, Sub-varsity game fees -- $53 ($57 for referee); varsity fees -- $65 ($72 for referee). Youth leagues pay about $40-$45 per game.
  • Great fellowship.
  • Flexible assignments.
