Conditioning
This is the one sport in which the only conditioning needed is to be able to stand on your feet for long periods of time and be able to move within a 6-8 feet back and forth. You will also need to be able to stand on a referee stand and climb 3-4 steps.
Temperament
Coaches & players are usually mellow compared to other sports. Fans who get unruly are addressed by host management. So officials don't take to much abuse.
Wisdom
You will be asked to learn the rules, but what is most important is that you know how to apply them. Prior experience as a player or youth official helps, but is no guarantee nor is it required to become a qualified official.
Certification
To be certified to officiate CIF sanctioned sporting events, you must:
- Attend 80% of scheduled classes (6-10, depending on the sport)
- Score 80% (70% for first-year officials) in a rules knowledge exam.
Benefits
The rewards are great.
- Great networking
- Flexible Assignments
- Extra Income
